Friess Frame

As your State Representative, I want to ensure you stay informed about the issues impacting our community. From standing up for meaningful legislation to addressing our state’s teacher shortage and supporting our law enforcement officers, I remain committed to advocating for policies that strengthen Southern Illinois.

In this newsletter, I’ll share updates on my latest efforts in Springfield and how we can work together to create a safer, more prosperous future for our families. Your voice matters, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve you.

Madigan Verdict

Yesterday, justice was served as former House Speaker Michael J. Madigan was found guilty of multiple counts in federal court. No one, not even the most powerful politician, is above the law.

Madigan’s conviction shows the deep-rooted culture of corruption that has plagued Illinois for decades. While this verdict brings accountability, it’s only the first step. The current House rules, shaped under Madigan’s 40-year reign, remain virtually unchanged, allowing the same flawed system to persist under Democratic leadership.

The people of Illinois deserve better. House Republicans are ready with meaningful ethics reforms to ensure that this state’s government works for the people, not for the political elite. It’s time for the majority party to stop protecting the legacy of corruption and join us in restoring integrity to Illinois politics.

My Recently Filed Legislation to Repeal Illinois’ FOID Card Requirement

I recently filed House Bill 1232, a measure that would repeal the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card Act in Illinois.

Illinois remains one of the few states in the nation that imposes this extra layer of bureaucracy on responsible gun owners. The FOID card is redundant and unnecessary, as all legal gun purchases are already subject to federal background checks. This legislation would make it so that law-abiding citizens can exercise their Second Amendment rights without government overreach.

If passed, HB1232 would not change existing federal background check requirements or any regulations regarding concealed carry permits.

We must protect the constitutional rights of Illinois citizens. Responsible gun owners have been under attack by the Illinois government, and it’s time to VOID the FOID!

Enough is Enough

For weeks, we’ve been in session. For weeks, Democrats have had the power to bring real, meaningful legislation to the floor—bills that could lower taxes, address crime, and ease the financial burden on families. But instead, they’ve wasted time on political games.

Last Wednesday was no different. Instead of passing laws that actually help our constituents, they pushed resolutions like HR115-119, a meaningless gesture that does nothing to improve the lives of hardworking Illinoisans.

That’s why my Republican colleagues and I took a stand. We walked out of the House chamber to send a clear message: Enough is enough. We weren’t elected to play along with their political theater. We were elected to fight for the people.

Illinois families deserve real leadership—not empty resolutions.

My Newly Filed Legislation to Address Teacher Shortage

The teacher shortage in Illinois is a growing crisis, impacting schools in every part of the state, including our district. Without enough qualified educators, our children’s learning experience suffers, leading to larger class sizes and diminished resources.

To tackle this challenge, I’ve introduced HB1211, a bill designed to remove unnecessary barriers for aspiring educators while maintaining high standards in the profession. We need to make it easier for passionate, dedicated individuals to enter the classroom and help shape the next generation. This bill focuses on streamlining certification requirements and providing incentives for educators in high-need areas. A strong education system is the backbone of our future, and I will continue advocating for policies that ensure our students receive the best education possible.

Investing in education is about investing in people. Our schools need qualified, skilled teachers to meet the unique needs of every child. This issue is personal to me because my family has many educators. I know what teachers go through and want to support aspiring teachers and schools in any way that I can. I want Illinois to become a place where the best and brightest young aspiring educators decide to put down roots. This plan is a step in that direction.

Committee Appointments

I’m honored to have been appointed to several critical committees that address the needs of our district and the state:

Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and IT

Elementary and Secondary Education: Administration, Licensing, and Charters

Higher Education

Judiciary-Civil

Judiciary-Criminal

Restorative Justice

These assignments provide opportunities to focus on enhancing education, improving public safety, advancing technology, and ensuring a fair judicial system. I look forward to advocating for meaningful policies that make a difference for the people of our district.

Addressing Shortages in Law Enforcement

Law enforcement agencies across our state are facing critical shortages, making it harder to keep our communities safe. Our officers work tirelessly to protect us, and they deserve our support. That’s why I’ve introduced House Bill 1206, a bill that offers student loan repayment assistance to former police officers willing to return to service.

We need experienced officers on our streets—individuals who understand the communities they serve and are dedicated to maintaining public safety. By providing financial incentives, we can encourage trained officers to rejoin law enforcement, strengthening our police forces and ensuring that our neighborhoods remain safe places to live, work, and raise families.

Public safety should never be a partisan issue. I will continue working on policies that support our law enforcement officers and hold criminals accountable.
